Our Story

Nobuyuki Aoki, owner of Kitami Carrington and Kitami King Street, is devoted to serving people authentic Japanese cuisine at its best.

Kitami has existed in Newcastle in various guises at different locations over the years and has developed a reputation for authentic, fresh and delicious Japanese cuisine.

Nobu grew up in Osaka, Japan, working as a fisherman for a time before making a living first as an award-winning designer, before following his other passion and opening his own award-winning restaurant and izakaya bar.

Upon moving to Australia he ran the kitchen at the original Kitami Darby Street from 2008, before taking ownership of the Kitami name in 2013.

In 2014 Nobuyuki and Yukari opened Kitami Carrington. Kitami Carrington started off as a Japanese grocery store and take away and has developed into a successful restaurant with Yukari as chef and Nobu as manager/head chef.

Nobu had always dreamed of opening a Japanese izakaya bar in the heart of Newcastle's CBD. In 2017 an opportunity arose and Nobu launched Kitami King Street. Kitami King Street has a moody, late-night jazz feel that is infused with Japanese culture. Kimonos and samurai swords adorn the walls. There is even an authentic samurai armour.

"I love design, music, food and old things so I build on my past experience," Nobu said.

A message about Kitami King Street…

It is with a heavy heart that we had to close the Kitami King Street location. We are now fully focused on Kitami Carrington, where you can eat-in, takeaway or get home delivery. Visit the Kitami Carrington page for more information. Thank you for your support - Nobu
